ALL SMOKE KILLS

By: DAVE C.

When will the world give up this filthy habit? And can the US give up its addiction while it puffs away from every smokestack and exhaust pipe, giving the planet lung cancer? It’s setting such a bad example to teenage economies.

Despite decades of evidence that smoking kills – that cigarettes are weapons of mass destruction – the lighting of fags still causes as much fatal disease as malaria and AIDS combined. And despite certain knowledge that fossil fuels are ruining the world’s respiratory system, the addicts are unrepentant.

If we continue to ignore the health warnings on coalmines and keep exhaling great clouds of CO2 we’ll all go up the chimney. Yet governments are still opening mines as often as smokers open their packets of cancer sticks.

Let’s look at the history of cigarette smoking in the US. Again and again it will remind you of the fight against fossil fuels. The same suppression of science, the same decades of denial, the same lying propaganda, the same consumer resistance, the same tragic consequences.

As we move into the climate change century don’t forget the scale and cynicism of the 20th century’s mass marketing of death that turned out Lucky Strikes.

Despite the warning labels finally forced upon the industry like emission smoke tunnels continues to grow and kill.

Cigarettes were recognized as a cause of lung cancer by 1950. Big tobacco steadfastly denied the charge for over 40 years while 160,000 Americans a year died from the disease. Historian Allan Brandt’s definitive study, The Cigarette Century: The Rise, Fall and Deadly Persistence of the Product that Defined America, records the long-term strategy of industry to avoid public intervention at all costs.

It's worthless to stop people to smoke while most of the world's largest tobacco companies, let's say R.J. Raynolds, Brown & Williamson and Philip Morris; won't even help to stop increasing smoke by producing thier precious sources of revenue - fags. Those companies can stop increasing smoke to the planet by invest their big profit in smokeless business and also they can save the health of their branded smokers like producing gums to help smokers stop smoking. I bet they will gain as much profit as selling fags because those smokers will sure do buying those gums when they don't have fags to buy. I am the one who have to live as second smoker everyday and I agree with the fact that those fags producers and consumers are gradually destroy our planet or look at another side, they also gradually destroy our non-smoker lives physically and mentally!
