Students at Columbia University turned hostile and showed strong anti-semitism vibes towards Jewish students. They were humiliated in the classrooms and excluded from several clubs at the university when other student groups ostracized them amidst pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
The complaints from Jewish students were often ignored by the university staff and faculty members at which the university task force released a report on Friday after deeper investigations into the matter.

After reviewing complaints from 500 students and a deeper probe into their testimonials, some “serious and pervasive” problems were revealed, the report said. The faculty task force now asks for a revamped anti-bias training of the university students and an altered complaint-reporting system about anti-semitism.
The report was released four days before the start of classes for the fall semester at Columbia University.
Details of Columbia University task force report
The report by the Columbia University Task Force also mentioned that students should avoid passing political statements or showing support for one group that would cause discrepancies among students and give rise to a problematic educational environment within the institute.
To clarify the matters, the report defined anti-semitism, emphasizing that it includes discrimination or exclusion thoroughly based on “real or perceived ties to Israel” and “certain double standards applied to Israel”.
The task force stressed that the reason for the death toll soar during the Hamas-Israel war is this anti-semitism agenda that is a key feature of pro-Palestinian demonstrations. The task force explained that the use of the definition of anti-semitism is just for training and education on the matter’s seriousness rather than limiting the speech.
The incidents mentioned in the task force report
The task force cited incidents at the campus where Jewish students were threatened and shoved, sometimes with blatant exhibitions of symbols like swastikas. Additionally, it reported the change of friendship into enmity that Jewish students faced from their close friends since the beginning of the Israel-Palestine war.
One incident talked about an Israeli student who was forced to leave a dance group since she rejected to join the pro-Palestinian coalition within Columbia University’s divest wing.
Views of Task Force in Antisemitism
Co-Chairpersons of the Task Force on Antisemitism, Ester Fuchs, Nicholas Lemann, and David M. Schizer elucidated that the recommendations were put forward for preserving the right to protest, freedom of speech, educate, research, speak, and learn without encouraging harassment, discrimination or exclusion.
The chairpersons wanted the students to know that although the focus of the report was anti-semitism, however, it would set a future direction for Islamophobia, anti-Arab racism, and other forms of social discrimination all over the globe.
Interim President of the University, Katrina Armstrong said that the streamlining of new ways of handling harassment complaints would ensure that no such discrimination is encouraged, from the faculty or the students’ side.
Armstrong stated, “This is an opportunity to acknowledge the harm that has been done and to pledge to make changes necessary to do better and to re-dedicate ourselves as university leaders, as individuals, and as a community, to our core mission of teaching and research”.
Pro-Palestinian University students and their online bulletin
An online bulletin from the University students openly announced that it would continue the protests and also stressed the faculty and team members to divest from Israeli companies and cut their ties with Israeli institutes.
The bulletin publishers condemned the university’s support for the Israeli students and their origins where they come from. The bulletin asked about the university’s “refusal to divest” and continued their genocide investments, which shows clear backing for Israel.
The constant suppression of the pro-Palestinian groups has instigated heavy scrutiny from the demonstrators at the campus, which was discussed in the report, coming two weeks after the resignation of Columbia University President Minouche Shafik.
