The Columbian music sensation Shakira is not happy with the Spanish tax office as she makes a comparison to the “Inquisition”. She gave the statement after her earnings made while living in Spain were confiscated by the tax office.
She compared the Spanish tax office to an old institution “The Inquisition” in a letter published in El Mundo on Wednesday. In the letter she revealed, “The Spanish tax office kept more than all my income for those years”.

Shakira’s history of tax allegations
Shakira was successful in locking a deal in 2023 to avoid a trial in Barcelona. She wanted to avoid serving in jail after getting imprisoned for which she paid a fine of €7.8 million beforehand.
The 2023 settlement was made with the prosecutors on the opening day of the trial after she was alleged for a massive tax fraud. The pop singer was accused of defrauding the tax authorities with €14.5 million from 2012 and 2014.
She explained later that she made the decision “with the best interest of my kids at heart”. She knew that she needed to keep her stress and emotional issues aside to look after her family. She emphasized that she needs to keep her focus on her career now.
Spanish tax office is strict about its tax receipts
This is not the first time that the Spanish tax office has caught the tax evaders. They have done it before with some of the top-rated celebrities residing in Spain. Argentine footballers Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo are some of the names. They were punished initially but were granted bail for being first-time offenders.
The ‘Waka Waka’ singer is completely devastated
In May 2024, the court had another probe against Shakira for alleged tax fraud related to earnings of her music career in the year 2028. This marked the end of her legal problems in Spain.
The lead singer made a staunch belief against the tax office that they were more interested in bringing her down rather than listening to her reasoning. She added, “You don’t solve things by burning people at the stake like an Inquisition trial”.
She expressed her grief over the “incomprehensible” matters of the tax office as she explained that she had worked more than a decade in Spain, but now seems all in vain. She knew that it was not due to her less work and that everyone was aware of it.
She tried to make an argument in support of her tax payments that she had not spent more than 183 days in Spain between 2012 and 2014. It is a specific Spanish limitation for a person to become tax payable being a resident.
Confirmations made by the tax office people
Spain’s tax office wanted to be sure of her claims and that is why, they conducted research from their side. It was confirmed from her social media account that her presence in Spain has been more than 183 days. Several witnesses proved the statement, which included her neighbors and hairdresser.
Currently, the singing queen lives with her two sons in Miami after she split up with Barcelona footballer, Gerard Pique.
