Tyreek Hill, one of the players of the professional American football team from the National Football League (NFL) ‘Miami Dolphins’ was detained by the police before the game. He was handcuffed and placed face down on the street just outside the stadium.

He was stopped for overspeeding and reckless driving ahead of the Miami Dolphins game on Sunday morning. Some of the fans saw him being taken by the police and made videos. The footage went viral on social media that earned the star with some criticism.

Tyreek Hill’s situation with the police

One of the officers who took Tyreek Hill after handcuffing him was one of the least involved in detaining the player.

After being detained by the police, Stephanie V. Daniels, the Police director of the Miami-Dade department told that an internal affairs investigation was initiated.

It was revealed that the officer was given a leave pending the outcome of the investigation, on which Hill said,

“That should tell you everything you need to know”.

Tyreek explained later that he was not disrespectful towards the police as he wasn’t raised like that. He didn’t argue and didn’t’ become aggressive. He said he is still trying to figure it out himself.

Daniels’ statement

On the other hand, Daniels wanted to review the situation in depth as she requested an “immediate review”. For weightage, she wanted the department to make any camera footage available at the scene.

Later, in a statement, she confessed that

“I’m committed to transparency and accountability to the community with any situation involving my officers”.

Calais Campbell to the rescue but got himself in trouble

Calais Campbell, a Miami Dolphins defensive tackle player, also came to his teammate’s aid and was handcuffed briefly by the police. He said,

“That makes sense based on the situation”.

Hill was of the view that everything happened so fast that it did not give him a moment to realize what was happening. However, he was content that his teammates were there to support him when he could have felt otherwise alone.

Although Campbell wasn’t traveling with the star player at that time, he was driving into Hard Rock Stadium when he saw Hill being detained by the police and handcuffed. He stopped to help his mate which led to the 17-year-old NFL veteran being handcuffed as well.

The Miami police informed Campbell that Hill refused to obey their orders, and that is why it landed him in hot waters. Campbell admitted that the situation did turn out “a bit extreme” when he got out of his car trying to calm the situation down.

It gets dubious being a Black, Hill said

Hill explained that being black, he didn’t want to use his celebrity element to get himself out of the police station. However, he wondered later what could’ve happened if he wasn’t an NFL star.

He clarified that he just wanted to do in such a situation what his uncle always told him to do. His uncle asked him to get his hands up and listen to what they said to you, “Just listen”. Hill was a bit scared that being black sometimes made the situation doubtful because he thought about what they could’ve done to him if he wasn’t a Miami football star.

Hill in the GAME!

Afterward, Hill helped the Miami Dolphins win against the Jacksonville Jaguars by scoring 20-17 in which Hill caught seven passes for 130 yards. Hill celebrated the victory with a mimicry of a handcuffed sign.

Before the game kicked off and after Hill was released from the police station, he talked to his wife and family to let them know that he was okay.
